Three Arrests Made in Connection to the Recent Massive Twitter Accounts Hacking Scandal

US authorities recently arrested a 17-year-old Floridian who is suspected of being behind the hacking of the Twitter accounts of famous people. The hack was in connection to a crypto scam that hit Twitter in July.

According to an announcement by the DoJ, three people have been arrested thus far in connection to the Twitter hacking scandal. Two of the men were identified as Mason Sheppard, who is 19 from Bognor Regis, UK, and Nima Fazeli who is 22, from Orlando, Florida.

Graham Ivan Clark, who is 17 years old, was identified as the third suspect and the mastermind of the operation. He was arrested in Tampa, Florida. According to a statement by the office of Hillsborough State Attorney, Ivan was arrest on Friday, July 31, 2020. Clark faces 30 felonies charged that include organized fraud, fraudulent use of personal data, communications fraud, and access to an electronic device without authorization.

Sheppard, the other suspect in the case, is facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money fraud, and the intentional access of a protected computer. Fazeli, who is from Florida, faces charges of aiding and abetting intentional access to a protected computer.

According to Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren, the crimes were committed using the names of famous personalities. However, they were not the main victims. He added that the scammers intended to steal money from ordinary Americans from the entire country, including those in Florida.

During the operation, the hackers targeted the account of President Obama, VP Biden, and other famous people such as Kanye West, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet.

How the Scam Worked

After they took over the accounts of the famous personalities, the hackers sent tweets telling their followers that if they donated $1000 in BTC, they would get it back double. Authorities stated that in the few hours the scam as active, the hackers managed to get over $100,000 in BTC from the scam. Authorities plan to prosecute Graham Ivan Clark as an adult in Florida.
